Jean-François Macq, Optimizing the Transmission Reliability for Multipath Routing in Communication Networks
In communications networks, a common means of increasing transmission reliability is Forward Error Correction (FEC). It consists of adding redundant information within blocks of consecutive data packets. In case of packet losses within a block, the receiver is able to recover the original data provided that the number of packets successfully transmitted is beyond a threshold. Otherwise some data of the block is irrecoverably lost. It has been shown that splitting the transmission of data on several paths generally contributes to the FEC robustness by decreasing the negative effect of long bursts of consecutives packet losses occurring on a link.
Using a classical 2-state Markovian model for losses occurring on a link, we first propose a method for approximating the probability of irrecoverable loss of a FEC block for a given multipath routing. Our approach is based on a peakedness measure of the data flows. Next we address the problem of finding a multipath routing which minimizes our approximation of the probability of irrecoverable loss and we propose a method which solves the problem for some network topologies.
